Time to shift into second gear.

Family is always a work in progress, and that idea sits at the heart of ABC’s hit comedy Shifting Gears. For the Season 2 key art, we were tasked with conveying in a singular comedic image the evolving father-daughter relationship between the two leads – Matt (Tim Allen) and Riley (Kat Dennings) – and how they maybe still had a few speedbumps to hurdle.

Classic cars are a key part of the show, and it was our objective to organically work a car – or at least an element of one – into the art. We landed on a classic car’s sideview mirror, using the “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear” line to inspire our tagline, and underline Matt and Riley’s fun, quirky, and sometimes fraught relationship.
